Lumber Dimensions: Nominal vs Actual Size Chart

Lumber is sold by nominal size but milled to smaller actual dimensions. A 2×4 is actually 1½″ × 3½″. This chart covers all standard S4S (surfaced four sides) softwood dimensional lumber. Rough-sawn lumber IS full nominal size.

Rough-sawn vs S4S

Rough-sawn lumber IS the nominal size — a rough-sawn 2×4 is actually 2″ × 4″. S4S is planed smooth on all four sides, reducing dimensions by roughly ¼″–½″. Always use actual dimensions for structural calculations.
